Week of February 24-28

Learning Tasks for Monday, February 24

1.  Writing into the Day

2.  Common Instructional Framework Data
Last week, you collected information about CIF strategies in your classes.  Today, we'll start collecting that data and making inferences based on our findings.
  • Finish filling in the CIF chart in your packet.
  • Tally Up:  how many people prefer each CIF strategy?
We will enter our information here.

3.  Brainstorming
On Monday, we will be presenting our findings in the gym to Mr. Biehl, Dr. Chapman, Ms. Foushee, Ms. Brown, and others who have heard about the awesome work you guys are doing!  We have some choices to make:  how can we best represent our data?  What visuals and data should we include?  What audience should we address?

4.  Planning
What resources do we need in order to put together our presentation?  By the end of class, you should have a concrete plan in place for Monday's presentation.  We will work on that presentation in class this week.

Using either the NCES Graphs website or good ol' pen & paper, create a graph/chart that depicts our class' CIF results.

Partners Graphs

4.  Discuss
What patterns are you noticing in the data so far?  What inferences can you make from our class data?

5. Conclusion
How do your responses in the experiment packet compare to those of your classmates?  Does everyone agree on which CIF strategies are most effective?  Why do you think this is?

Objectives:  I can...
-predict and reflect on the role balance plays a role in my journey to success.

1.  Warm up Discussion
When Ms. Foushee (aka Ms. KFC) visited our AVID classes, she demonstrated her point using a balancing bird.  WHY did she use the balancing bird?

  1. Decorate the bird with the following:
  • Head: Where do you want to end up?
  • Body: How can you design your life so you get there?
  • Wing one: How will you stay balanced so you can get things done and get there?
  • Wing two: How can you make your LEC experience help you get where you want to go?
2.  Carefully cut out your bird (no lost fingers or wings, please).
3.  Place pennies on the bird's wings.  Does the bird balance on your finger???

Learning Tasks for Thursday, February 20

Essential Question:  How do UbD and CIF affect student learning?

Objectives:  I can...
-deliver a lesson plan in a organized, professional manner.
-make connections between Standards, essential questions, and objectives.

Today is the big day:  LESSON DAY!!!
You guys have done an AWESOME job planning and creating your lessons, and now it's time to show them off to the class.

1. Lesson Plans
Each group will be allowed five minutes to set up their presentation.  They will then be given ten minutes to give the presentation and three minutes to discuss the planning that went into the presentation (Essential Question, objectives, CIF strategies used, etc.). While your classmates are presenting, be sure to assess them using the rubric that I provide.  Remember to show your classmates the same respect you would give any of your teachers!

Questions to Ponder:  What goes into lesson planning?  What roles do UbD and CIF play in lesson planning?

2.  Education Experiment Packet
We will go through the packet together and fill in CIF predictions!

3. Homework
-Bring two pennies for Friday!
-Track CIF strategies in your Education Experiment packet

Learning Tasks for Monday, February 17 and Tuesday, February 18

Essential Question:  How do the educational structures at LEC help students succeed?

I can:
...analyze and discuss how autonomy, mastery, and purpose affect motivation.
...create a lesson based on Common Instructional Framework Strategies.

1.  Writing into the Day
What motivates you to succeed in life, school, work, etc.?

2.  Mini-Socratic Seminar
Think back to the motivation article that you read with Mrs. Wiggs.  Write at least three Higher Order Thinking questions that could lead to discussion about the video.  How does LEC create an environment that considers students' autonomymastery, and purpose?

Seminar Directions:
  • Pair up with a buddy.  Determine who will enter the inner circle for Round One.
  • Participants- bring your journal entry with you into the center.  Our Fearless Leader will begin and direct the conversation.
  • Observers- keep a close eye on your buddy!  When time is called, you must tell him/her to either step up or step back.
  • Switch!  Participants become observers, and observers become participants.  We will choose a new Fearless Leader, who will begin a new discussion.

3.  CIF Activity Creation
*Imaginary Scenario*:  Oh no!  All the LEC teachers bad doughnuts at a staff meeting and called in sick for the week.  Fortunately, Mr. Biehl heard that you all are now experts on Common Instructional Framework, so he's asked YOU GUYS to teach EACH OTHER while the teachers recover from the Great LEC Doughnut Tragedy!  No pressure.  You've got this.  Using what you've learned about CIF over the past two weeks, along with your handy dandy checklist, you and your group will design a lesson that you will be delivering to your peers on Thursday.  In addition to your 10-minute lesson plan, you will also provide the class with a 3-minute explanation of how you came up with your Essential Question and Objectives and why you chose the Common Instructional Framework strategy you chose.

Directions:
1. Move into your assigned group.  Ms. Jones will assign you a standard to address with your lesson plan.
2. Use the Standard to develop an Essential Question and three objectives ("I can...").
3. Create a 10-minute lesson plan to teach your objectives.  You must use at least one CIF strategy in your lesson plan.
4. Designate one group member to fill in and share the following document with Ms. Jones and the group.
5.  Make sure you abide by the checklist and template while designing your lesson!

Groups:
Group 1-  Austin,  Cynthia, Janelle
Group 2- Michael, Courtney, Jeremiah
Group 3- Westley, Ta'Liyah
Group 4- Amil, Jazzmon, Keyona

4. Homework
-Bring in pennies for Friday!  We will be making balancing birds and need two pennies for every student.
-Track CIF strategies and Essential Questions being used in your other classes.  Document those strategies in your Education Experiment lab packet.

Learning Tasks for Wednesday, February 5

Guess what day it is???

Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

1.  Writing into the Day
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913.  In 1955, she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger.  Her brave actions sparked controversy, and Ms. Parks is now considered an important figure in the Civil Rights Movement.  If you had been Rosa Parks in this situation, would you have done the same thing?  Why or why not?
